After you complete your activities, review them with a ranger at any visitor center. Check the weather forecast, find a comfortable spot, bring your binoculars if you have them, a blanket if you want, a red light, and maybe a star chart, and look up. <br /> <br /> Monthly printable star charts are available <a href="javascript:HandleLink(">here</a>. We recommend reading them using a red flashlight or headlamp. Red lighting doesn't interfere with your night vision and will make stargazing much more enjoyable and safer than white lighting. Try star hopping - start with a familiar star or constellation, and learn how it points or guides you to something else. For example, from the Big Dipper you can <em>arc</em> to Arcturus, and from there you can <em>speed on</em> to Spica. <br /> <br /> <a href="javascript:HandleLink(">Clear Dark Sky</a> provides an astronomer's forecast for dark skies. <a href="javascript:HandleLink(">Heavens Above </a>has a database of visible satellites you might spot. <br /> <br />

There are amazing opportunities for stargazing throughout all of Big Bend National Park. Just look for a dark spot with an open view of the horizon. Have you ever seen the Milky Way stretch all the way across the sky? Or spotted a neighboring galaxy with only your eyes? Big Bend National Park works hard to preserve our dark nights and keep these opportunities available for all. Pets are allowed along paved roads. They are not allowed on trails. 

Far away from most city lights, Big Bend National Park preserves pristine darkness. Take this chance to stargaze, and experience the half of the park that many of us miss - nighttime.

On this bluff, mortar holes from ancient inhabitants can be seen. Continue down to the river's edge and into the canyon until the canyon walls meet the river. Sandy slopes in the canyon are fun for children.</p> <table cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" id="cs_idLayout2" summary="" width="100%"> <tbody> <tr> <td id="cs_idCell2x1x1"> <h4>Hot Springs Canyon Trail</h4> <p><strong>Difficulty: Moderate; Distance: 6 miles round trip<br /> Begin at Daniel's Ranch or Hot Springs</strong></p> <p>This 3 mile trail (either direction) connects Daniel's Ranch and the Hot Springs. The first 100 yards is wheelchair accessible and crosses a boardwalk through a spring-fed wetland. Then the trail gradually climbs a limestone hill with panoramic vistas of the Rio Grande, and the Chisos and Del Carmen Mountains. Hot Springs Trail

<p>For over 100 miles, the Rio Grande serves as the southern boundary of Big Bend National Park and the international border with Mexico. The river is vital for the survival of the plants, animals, and human inhabitants of the Chihuahuan Desert.<br /> <br /> The river and its tributaries are set in one of the most dramatic and storied landscapes in the West—from stunning narrow and deep canyons, dense riparian vegetation, and striking cliffs to long and unobstructed views. Open stretches of desert give way to vault-like canyons that carry travelers along the free-flowing Rio Grande Wild and Scenic River. <br /> <br /> A highlight of any trip to Big Bend is to spend time along the banks of the Rio Grande. A number of <a href="https://www.nps.gov/bibe/planyourvisit/river_hikes.htm">short trails</a> provide excellent views and access to our watery border with Mexico. Grand vistas of canyons and wide desert panoramas fill your view while the sounds and smells of water in the desert tantalize your senses. <br /> <br /> Many visitors choose to enjoy the river as a <a href="https://www.nps.gov/bibe/planyourvisit/river-trips.htm">float trip</a>, either with their own gear, or through the help of local outfitters. Trips vary from easy day floats to challenging multi-day expeditions. </p>

The Rio Grande is accessible from a number of places in Big Bend National Park, and a variety of hiking trails provide even further opportunities to get up close and personal with our watery border with Mexico.

Located at mile 5 along the Chisos Basin Road.

<p>From the very first step, the Lost Mine Trail leads hikers into a different world - a woodland-grassland ecosystem with some of the best scenic views in the park. Walk this trail and learn why so many park staff and visitors alike list it as their favorite hike in Big Bend National Park.</p> <h4>Trail Basics</h4> The Lost Mine Trail rises 1,100 feet over 2.4 miles (4.8 miles round-trip) and provides excellent views of the surrounding mountains and desert. The average time to complete this trail is around three hours, so take plenty of water and a snack. <h4>Hike Safe</h4> <ul> <li><i>This is mountain lion and black bear country!</i> Keep children close to you; do not let them hike alone or run ahead of the group. If you see a mountain lion, <em>do not run</em>.</li> <li>To improve your hiking experience, it is important to carry and drink plenty of water.</li> <li>Protect yourself from the desert sun, even up in the mountains; use sunscreen and wear a wide-brimmed hat.</li> <li>Know your limits. Take breaks as needed, and enjoy the view</li> </ul> <h4>Trail Tips</h4> <ul> <li>If your time and energy is limited, consider hiking only the first mile to a scenic overlook.</li> <li>Parking at the trailhead is limited; during busy periods you may have to hike another trail and come back to Lost Mine another time. <em>Do not attempt to park along the side of the road.</em></li> <li>The Lost Mine is an excellent hike at all times of day, as the climb often leads to cooler temperatures at higher elevations.</li> <li>The upper portion of the trail is steep; help prevent erosion by staying on the trail and following switchbacks.</li> <li>There are no toilets along this trail. Human waste must be buried six inches deep, at least 100 yards from the trail or any water source or drainage. Be sure to pack out your toilet paper; it should not be buried, and burning it is prohibited. Being prepared for the trip is just as important as enjoying your visit.</li> <li>Respect other visitors and protect the quality of their experience. Be courteous. Yield to other users on the trail. Let nature's sound prevail.</li> </ul>

Santa Elena Canyon Trail

<p>Santa Elena Canyon Trailhead<br /> <br /> The trail begins at the end of the Ross Maxwell Scenic Drive to Santa Elena Canyon. The trail crosses Terlingua Creek, takes you to the river’s edge inside the canyon and continues farther winding among large boulders until it ends abruptly where the canyon wall meets the river.</p>

<p>After crossing Terlingua Creek the trail enters between the walls of spectacular Santa Elena Canyon. The trail ascends on paved steps to a vista, then descends back to the water's edge, continuing into the canyon until the canyon walls meet the Rio Grande. The walls of the Canyon rise 1500 feet from the banks of the Rio Grande, making this one of the most dramatic and popular places to view the river. The sheer face of this canyon was formed by the Terlingua Fault, which is mostly covered in gravel. Calcite crystals filled in cracks formed by this fault and can be seen along the trail. The deepest channel of the Rio Grande is the international boundary, with each half of this canyon protected by a national park. The southern side belongs to the Area Protegida del Cañón de Santa Elena (Mexico) and the northern side is within Big Bend National Park (USA). Be prepared for mud. During wet times, abrupt rises to Terlingua Creek can make this trail impassable. Always watch for distant rainfall that could lead to flash flooding to avoid becoming stranded within the canyon.<br /> <br /> Trail Safety:<br /> <br /> Bring Plenty of water; a minimum of 1-2 liters per person<br /> <br /> Wear protective clothing, like sun hats and long sleeves<br /> <br /> Be aware of wildlife, such as snakes and mountain lions; maintain a safe distance<br /> <br /> Watch for water level rises. Do not cross flowing water.<br /> <br /> Trail Rules:<br /> <br /> No pets or bicycles on any trails<br /> <br /> No collecting or possessing plants, animals, minerals, or artifacts<br /> <br /> Do not feed or approach wildlife<br /> <br /> Pack out your trashAll boating/rafting requires a permit<br /> <br /> Drone/UAV use prohibited within the park</p>

Pets are not allowed on trails, off roads, or on the river. Your pet can only go where your car can go.

The trail begins at the end of the Ross Maxwell Scenic Drive to Santa Elena Canyon, and is one of the prettiest short trails in the park. The trail crosses Terlingua Creek, takes you to the river’s edge inside the canyon and continues farther winding among large boulders until it ends abruptly where the canyon wall meets the river.

Visitors have access to the trailhead area at all hours, but for safety please hike when there is daylight due to proximity to the river.

Hike Into Santa Elena Canyon

Downtown Boquillas, Mexico

<p>Visiting the tiny village of Boquillas, Mexico through the park's <a href="https://www.nps.gov/bibe/planyourvisit/border_travel.htm">Boquillas Crossing Port of Entry </a>is an option for visitors possessing a <u>valid passport</u>.<br /> <br /> Park at the Boquillas Crossing parking lot near Boquillas Canyon. After passing through the port of entry visitors are ferried across the Rio Grande on a small rowboat for a modest fee ($5 round-trip). Walking across the river is permitted only at the Boquillas Crossing, but is not recommended if the river level is high.<br /> <br /> Once across the river visitors have the option of walking to the village (1/2 mile) or paying an additional fee to ride on a burro, horse, or in a vehicle. Local guides are available. Visitors are required to check in with Mexican immigration officials upon arrival in Boquillas, and pay a small entrance fee ($3) to the Mexican Protected Area that Boquillas is situated in. A small wrist bracelet is your receipt for the entrance fee. Visitors planning to stay overnight in Mexico will need to apply for a temporary visa. Secure overnight parking at the Boquillas Crossing Port of Entry may be available.<br /> <br /> The Boquillas Port of Entry is operated cooperatively by the National Park Service and U.S. Customs and Border Protection. The facility is staffed by National Park Rangers who can assist travelers with information about visiting the area. Proper documentation is required to cross. U.S. and Canadian citizens can present a valid Passport or Passport Card to cross at this Class B Port of Entry. The first part 0.25 miles of the trail enters dense vegetation, crosses a pond on a boardwalk, and continues through thick brush. This section of the trail is a great place to look for birds, as well as other types of wildlife, including javelina, badger, fox, bobcat, nutria, turtles and fish.

The Rio Grande Village Nature Trail is located at the back of the Rio Grande Village Campground, across from campsite #18.

Water is one of the primary resources needed to support birds in this desert park. In an otherwise arid landscape, the presence of water greatly concentrates bird life. Rio Grande Village is consistently one of the best places to find a large number of birds. The principal area to search in Rio Grande Village is the Nature Trail in the southeastern corner of the campground near site #18.<br /> <br /> Distance: 0.75 miles (1.2 kilometers) roundtrip<br /> Elevation gain: 150 feet (45 meters)<br /> The first 100 yards is wheelchair accessible and crosses a boardwalk through a spring-fed wetland. The trail then gradually climbs a limestone hill with panoramic vistas of the Rio Grande, and the Chisos and Del Carmen mountains.

Rio Grande Village is consistently one of the best places to find a large number of birds in Big Bend National Park. The principal area to search is the Nature Trail, located in the southeastern corner of the campground.

Cottonwood Campground is a quiet, shady desert oasis located between the Castolon Historic District and scenic Santa Elena Canyon.

Cottonwood Campground is a great location to look for both riparian and desert birds. Numerous large cottonwood trees attract owls, woodpeckers, tanagers, warblers, orioles, and many other species. Year-round residents include golden-fronted woodpeckers, verdin, vermillion flycatchers, curve-billed thrashers, roadrunners, and rufous-crowned sparrows. 

Dogs are allowed on the dirt road that circles the campground. Just like everywhere else in the park, dogs must be on a leash at all times. 

Situated near the Rio Grande, under the shade of numerous large cottonwood trees, Cottonwood Campground is a great place to look for birds and other wildlife.

Visitors who are not camping at Cottonwood are allowed to drive into the campground, park and walk the gravel road through the campground. If entering early in the morning, please remember that other visitors are sleeping here and be as quiet as possible. Keep in mind that generators are not allowed in this campground at any time of the day. We also ask that you not idle your vehicle for long periods of time.

Backcountry Camping

Primitive Backcountry Campsite

<p>For those who wish to tent camp in the backcountry without having to backpack, Big Bend offers a number of <strong>primitive campsites along remote backcountry roads</strong>. These remote sites are located in the desert and along the Rio Grande. While a couple of sites are accessible to most vehicles, a high-clearance and 4-wheel drive vehicle is necessary to reach most of them.<br /> <br /> Primitive roadside campsites offer nice views, solitude, and a small flat gravel space to set up camp next to your vehicle. No shade, toilets, or other amenities are provided. <u>The use of generators is prohibited in the backcountry.</u><br />  </p> <ul> <li>These sites are primitive backcountry sites and will not accommodate large RVs and trailers. Plan accordingly.</li> <li>There are strict vehicle length and capacity limits for each campsite, so plan accordingly.</li> <li>A <a href="https://www.nps.gov/bibe/planyourvisit/bc_usepermits.htm">backcountry use permit</a> is <u>required</u> to camp at any of these sites.</li> <li>Permits for these campsites are available online (up to 6 months in advance) via <a href="https://www.recreation.gov/camping/campgrounds/10028875">www.recreation.gov</a></li> <li>Permits for the primitive roadside sites along the <strong>River Road</strong>, <strong>Glenn Springs Road</strong>, and <strong>Old Maverick Road</strong> are only available in person at Panther Junction (daily 8:30 am - 5:00 pm) and Chisos Basin (daily 8:30 am - 4:00 pm) Visitor Centers. <u>NOTE: A rugged high-clearance 4x4 vehicle is required to access these campsites.</u></li> <li>All other primitive roadside sites are available for online permitting a (<em>up to 6 months in advance</em>) at <a href="https://www.recreation.gov/camping/campgrounds/10028875">www.recreation.gov.</a></li> </ul> <p>For details of each campsite, photos of the sites, and descriptions, please visit Big Bend's Primitive Campsite Page at:<br /> <a href="https://www.nps.gov/bibe/planyourvisit/roadsidecamps.htm">Primitive Roadside Campsites - Big Bend National Park </a></p>

<p>Big Bend's vast undeveloped areas provide excellent opportunities for backcountry experiences if you seek solitude, wilderness, and adventure. For those who come prepared to backpack, there are hundreds of miles of trails, and vast expanses to explore. A <a href="https://www.nps.gov/bibe/planyourvisit/bc_usepermits.htm">backcountry permit</a> is required for overnight backpacking. </p> <h4>Backpacking in the Chisos Mountains</h4> <p>Overnight backpackers in the Chisos Mountains can choose from forty-two designated campsites. A <a href="https://www.nps.gov/bibe/planyourvisit/bc_usepermits.htm">backcountry permit</a> is required. Your permit will designate specific sites for specific nights. Each year, park rangers respond to desert emergencies when hikers are not prepared for the heat and extreme conditions of the desert. Due to the complex topography and vague trails/routes, a topographic map and a compass/gps are necessary for some hikes. Not for novices, you will need to be fully equipped and physically prepared to pack your gear and water into the desert and camp primitively.<br /> <br /> Most of the desert areas of Big Bend National Park are open to wilderness backpacking. A backcountry permit is required. Prospective desert backpackers will need to have all the gear necessary for a safe trip, and be prepared to describe a <u>detailed itinerary to a park ranger</u>. You will need to have backpacking gear and be prepared to hike for at least 30 minutes from any road, and be out of sight of any road. There is no camping near or along or adjacent to any road. <p>Where is the best place to see the sunrise or sunset? Truly, the answer is anywhere in the park! With huge horizons and dramatic scenery, it is spectacular wherever you are. With such a large park and so many options, you just might discover your own perfect place!</p> <p>Don’t forget to look behind you— as the sun rises or sets, the light on the deserts, rocks, and canyons in all directions may be even more beautiful than the sun and clouds.  </p> <h2>Easy To Get To</h2> <p>Along <a href="https://www.nps.gov/bibe/planyourvisit/ross-maxwell-scenic-drive.htm">Ross Maxwell Scenic Drive</a>, stop at Sotol Vista for a western view including Santa Elena Canyon with chiaroscuro— both light and shadow!  </p> <p>In the Chisos Basin, walk the Window View Trail and sit on a bench to watch the Window frame your sunset.  </p> <p>In Rio Grande Village, hike the short <a href="https://www.nps.gov/bibe/planyourvisit/river_hikes.htm">Nature Trail</a> near campsite 18 for a 360 degree view!   </p> <p>Climb the path up a short hill by the <a href="https://www.nps.gov/bibe/planyourvisit/fossil-discovery-exhibit.htm">Fossil Discovery Exhibit</a> and enjoy a view of the hoodoos to the west.</p> <p>Stop by Mule Ears Overlook along Ross Maxwell Scenic Drive for interesting geology and great views.</p> <h2>Challenging Spots</h2> <p>Get a <a href="https://www.nps.gov/bibe/planyourvisit/bc_usepermits.htm">permit</a> for a <a href="https://www.nps.gov/bibe/planyourvisit/chisos-mountains-designated-campsites.htm">backcountry campsite</a> close to the <a href="https://www.nps.gov/bibe/planyourvisit/mountain_hikes.htm">South Rim</a>. Rewards for this 14-mile backpacking trip are seeing the sunset from the top of the 2,000 foot cliff. Wake up early from camp to see sunrise too!</p> <p>Drive the <a href="https://www.nps.gov/bibe/planyourvisit/primitive-dirt-roads.htm">Old Ore Road</a> (high-clearance and four wheel drive needed) for great views to the west.</p>

<p>Some of the best sunset photography can be had on the Nature Trail at Rio Grande Village. One can capture the drama and colors of the Sierra del Carmens to the east or the iconic "Hollywood Sunset" view of the Chisos Mountains to the west. Other more subtle views of the Rio Grande below offer alternatives to the classic sunset vistas. <br /> <br /> The trail is relatively easy and has some elevation gain involved. Footing is generally good but walking the trail after dark will require a headlamp or flashlight. After dark, watch your step! Night-time critters may be out and about. </p>

<h4>Big Bend by Bike</h4> <p>Lightly traveled roads and varied terrain make Big Bend a premier bicycling location. Over 100 miles of paved roads and 160 miles of backcountry dirt roads provide challenges for riders of all types and abilities. Bicyclists must be extremely cautious and well-prepared, but bicycling allows outstanding panoramic views unobstructed by a windshield. It also allows the bicyclist to see and hear some of the smaller wonders of Big Bend from a more intimate viewpoint.</p> <h4><strong>Safety</strong></h4> <p>Bicyclists must share the roads with vehicles and obey all traffic laws. Paved roads within the park are narrow and often have no shoulders. Bicyclists should take proper measures to stay safe, such as riding single-file, wearing bright and/or reflective clothing, and being aware of their surroundings.</p> <p>Traffic is sparse in summer and highest during March and early April and on holiday weekends throughout the year. Use extreme caution. </p> <h4><strong>Recommended Biking Routes: </strong></h4> <p>Many of the rides in Big Bend National Park are easier with a shuttle. A few suggestions follow. Check with a ranger for more information.</p> <h4><br /> <u>If you have a shuttle available:</u></h4> <h3 style="margin-left: 40px;">Panther Junction to Rio Grande Village</h3> <p style="margin-left: 40px;"><strong>Difficulty: Easy; Distance: 20 miles, paved; Time 1.5-2.5 hours</strong><br /> Although there are some hills, the ride is mostly downhill as the elevation drops 1,900 ft. over the course of the ride. Be wary of large motorhomes and trailers travelling this road, especially during fall, winter, and spring. For a variation, ride to the Hot Springs Historic District on the 2-mile unpaved spur road 16 miles from Panther Junction. Your shuttle can meet you at either Rio Grande Village or the Hot Springs. The ride has outstanding views of the Sierras del Carmen and the Rio Grande in the distance.</p> <h3 style="margin-left: 40px;">Panther Junction to Rio Grande Village via the Glenn Springs Road</h3> <p style="margin-left: 40px;"><strong>Difficulty: Moderate; Distance 10 miles paved, 25 miles unpaved; Time: 4-6 hours</strong><br /> Ride six miles toward Rio Grande Village on the paved road, then turn onto Glenn Springs Road. Follow it for 15 miles as it skirts the Chisos Mountains and leads to a desert spring before joining the River Road. Turn left and follow the River Road for 9.6 miles to its junction with the paved road. Turn right and ride on the paved road for 4 miles to Rio Grande Village.</p> <h3 style="margin-left: 40px;">Panther Junction to Castolon via the Ross Maxwell Scenic Drive</h3> <p style="margin-left: 40px;"><strong>Difficulty: Strenuous; Distance: 35 miles, paved; Time: 3-6 hours</strong><br /> This ride travels through some of the most scenic terrain in the park. It skirts the Chisos Mountains and passes interesting geologic features and historic sites. Although the loss of elevation between Panther Junction and Castolon is 1,580ft., the terrain is challenging with many steep hills.</p> <h3 style="margin-left: 40px;">Old Ore Road</h3> <p style="margin-left: 40px;"><strong>Difficulty: Strenuous; Distance: 26 miles, unpaved; Time: 4-6 hours</strong><br /> This ride is best taken from north to south for an easier ride and great views of the Chisos Mountains. The road is rough and rocky and the terrain is challenging. Park on the edge of the Dagger Flat Auto Trail at the north end of the Old Ore Road.</p> <h3 style="margin-left: 40px;">Old Maverick Road</h3> <p style="margin-left: 40px;"><strong>Difficulty: Easy; Distance: 13 miles, unpaved: Time: 1.5-2 hours one-way</strong><br /> Start from the parking lot near the Maverick Entrance Station. This route is easiest north to south. There are many good views along the route, which ends at Santa Elena Canyon. Seasoned riders can return to Maverick for a strenuous 26-mile trip.</p> <h4><u>If you do not have a shuttle available:</u></h4> <h3 style="margin-left: 40px;">Panther Junction to the Chisos Basin</h3> <p style="margin-left: 40px;"><strong>Difficulty: Strenuous; Distance: 20 miles, paved; Time: 2-4 hours round-trip</strong><br /> Ride three miles of gradual uphill west of Panther Junction to the Chisos Basin Junction. Turn left and ride seven miles to the Chisos Basin. The road is very steep, with 15% grades. The elevation gain is 1,650 ft. Watch for traffic and be ready to pull off the road if necessary. This ride is an aerobic challenge even for those in excellent physical condition. The ride down is exhilarating. Watch for animals and obstacles on the road and make sure you don't break the 45mph speed limit!</p> <h3 style="margin-left: 40px;">Grapevine Hills Road</h3> <p style="margin-left: 40px;"><strong>Difficulty: Moderate; Distance: 15 miles, unpaved; Time: 2-3 hours round-trip</strong><br /> Park at the junction of the paved road and the Grapevine Hills Road for this ride past interesting rock formations. For variety, hike the 2-mile round-trip Grapevine Hills Trail near the end of the road. Return the same way.</p> <h3 style="margin-left: 40px;">Paint Gap Road</h3> <p style="margin-left: 40px;"><strong>Difficulty: Moderate; Distance: 15 miles, unpaved; Time: 2-3 hours round-trip</strong><br /> Park at the junction of the paved road and the Paint Gap Road. The road has a variety of surfaces including sand and rocks, and is especially rough near the end. Return the same way.</p> <h3 style="margin-left: 40px;">Dagger Flat Auto Trail</h3> <p style="margin-left: 40px;"><strong>Difficulty: Easy; Distance: 18 miles, unpaved; Time: 2-3 hours round-trip</strong><br /> Park near the junction of the paved road and the Dagger Flat Auto Trail. This route is fairly flat with a gentle uphill on the way out. Watch for sand along the way--you can get bogged down. <p><span style="color:#c0392b;"><strong>If you have a high-clearance, four wheel drive vehicle</strong>,</span> Big Bend's primitive dirt roads provide many opportunities to get off the beaten path and explore the remote corners of this park.<br /> <br /> Some of these roads traverse bedrock and washes, making them extremely rough. A slow speed is mandatory for safe passage. Be prepared with plenty of water, a jack, and good spare tire. On these isolated, infrequently patrolled backcountry roads, a disabled vehicle can become a life-threatening situation.</p> <h4><strong>You Will Need A High Clearance Four-Wheel-Drive (4WD) Vehicle</strong></h4> <p>A high clearance 4WD vehicle is defined as a SUV or truck type vehicle, with at least 15 inch tire rims or more, with a low gear transfer case, designed for heavier type use than a standard passenger vehicle, with at least 8 inches of clearance or more from the lowest point of the frame, body, suspension, or differential, to the ground, also including a means to mechanically power both, front and real wheels at the same time.<br /> <br /> Miles of primitive dirt roads lead across washboards and boulders, through canyons and creek beds, past old settlements and cemeteries. In addition to marvelous panoramic vistas, many of these roads access hiking trails, primitive roadside campsites, and the river.<br /> <br /> Rain can make roads difficult to drive or impassable. Always inquire about current road conditions.</p> <h4><span style="color:#c0392b;">Protect Big Bend. <h3>Floating the Rio Grande</h3> <p>If you have the time and a spirit of adventure, you may want to consider a river trip. Seeing the park's canyons from the middle of the Rio Grande can be an incredible experience. Trips vary from easy day floats to challenging multi-day expeditions. </p> <p>Floating the Rio Grande can take you through miles of canyons up to 1,500 feet deep, where the sunlight may reach the bottom only briefly on winter days. As in other parts of the park, your ears may tell you more than your eyes. Listen for beavers crawling through the brush;you might catch a glimpse as one slides down the riverbank into the water. Turtles, especially red-eared sliders, often sun themselves on rocks and logs just above the waterline. Great blue herons and green kingfishers are just some of the many birds you may see flying along the river.<br /> <br /> Along the more open areas of the Rio Grande, you may see local people fishing, farming, and engaging in other traditional activities. These quiet stretches of the river offer expansive views of the colorful buttes, mesas, and mountains in both the U.S. and in Mexico. Far fewer people float the open water between the canyons, so it is possible to go for days without seeing another boater.<br /> <br /> <a href="https://www.nps.gov/bibe/planyourvisit/riverregs.htm">A backcountry permit and specific equipment is required for day-use and overnight river trips.</a><br /> <br /> <a href="https://www.nps.gov/bibe/planyourvisit/river-trips.htm">River Trips - Big Bend National Park </a></p> <h3>International Border</h3> <p>There is often concern about being close to an international border, but incidents between Big Bend visitors and Mexican nationals are exceptionally rare.</p> <p>The middle of the deepest channel of the Rio Grande is the international boundary. Over the course of your trip, you may cross this boundary several times. Currently, passports are not required. Landing on the Mexican bank of the river is considered an illegal crossing and could result in fines and jail time.
