A four-step stairwell and paved path lead from the parking lot up to a small rock visitor center perched on the edge of the Haleakalā crater. A metal railing extends on one side with uneven gravel and rocky viewing area. A separate building with restrooms is along the paved pathway to the left out of the parking lot. The single story rock structure can be accessed by an entrance near the bathroom building or an entrance at the top of the stairway and paved path. Inside is a small bookstore with racks of clothing, books, and souvenirs in one area. There is an information desk and checkout area. Expansive glass windows provide views into the crater valley of the dozen cinder cones and valley floor several thousand feet below. Flat panel exhibits adorn the walls, and a large 3D topographic model map of the mountain and crater valley stands in the middle of the room. There is a small office with closing door in the rear of the one-room visitor center space.

About a 30 minute drive from the Headquarters Visitor Center, the Haleakalā Visitor Center is perched on the edge of the impressive volcanic valley. Inside, park staff can answer questions at the information desk. Visitors can learn about the history of the mountain through various displays. There is also a Hawaiʻi Pacific Parks Association bookstore with souvenirs available for purchase. Restrooms are located nearby in a separate building and are open 24/7. A one-story, tan building situated next to the park road. The outside of the building displays a National Park Service Arrowhead and the words "Visitor Center." A garden of native trees and shrubs is planted along the sidewalk to the front doors. A lobby with glass windows has a bench and leads into a small exhibit hall. The exhibits feature Native Hawaiian cultural practices. There are accessibility options for the exhibits available at the front desk. To the right of the exhibits is the front desk, where park rangers supply maps and brochures. Copies of the main park brochure in Braille are available at the front desk to borrow. Behind the rangers at the desk is a large painting of the park's incredible biodiversity. Next to the information desk is the cash register for the partnering bookstore, Hawai'i Pacific Parks Association. The bookstore offers hiking and birding guides, books on Native Hawaiian history and culture, and educational children's books. Postcards, magnets, t-shirts, and a small selection of snacks are also available. By the windows looking out to the road is the Headquarters Visitor Center stamp on a small table. The stamp says "Haleakalā National Park, Headquarters" and shows the current date and a small engraving of a nēnē. There is green ink and sheets of paper available next to the stamp on the table. All throughout the visitor center are realistic models of some of Hawai'i's native birds perched on branches by the ceiling. The models feature the i'iwi, which is a bright red bird with a long, curved, red beak. There is also the 'apapane, which is red and white, and the 'alauahio and the 'amakihi, which are both yellow birds.

The Headquarters Visitor Center is 1 mile (1.6 km) past the Summit District entrance gate. Inside, park staff can answer questions at the information desk. Headquarters Visitor Center Stamp

Hanging from the ceiling is a realistic model of the ʻiwa, or frigate bird, with deep black coloration, a forked tail, and a seven-foot wingspan.
